A recent lawsuit facing the King of Rock 'n' Roll's estate is becoming a bizarre international phenomenon. A Swiss man named Hans-Peter Gauch took a trip to Graceland last October, and rather than leaving with a few records and music relics, he came home with a debilitating hearing loss and marital problems.
According to court documents obtained by The Blast, Gauch is suing Elvis Presley's estate and the Guest House at Graceland hotel for negligence after being exposed to an "incredibly loud" fire alarm.
While staying at the Memphis-based hotel, Gauch was awoken with a non-emergency fire alarm at 8 am, which sounded for 30 minutes. The Swiss man claims that the hotel had inaccurate fire exits and that he was “deeply concerned for [his] safety.”
“Once the fire alarm was no longer sounding, Mr. Gauch noticed the presence of a significant whistling noise in both of his ears,” the lawsuit states. “He had to go to the emergency department of a local hospital where they determined he had ‘Tinnitus’ which is a condition involving the perception of noise which is considered to be a problematic issue that can cause ‘severe and debilitating’ symptoms.”
Over the course of the year, Gauch claims the Tinnitus has altered his sleeping patterns, debilitated his hearing and speech, and has left him with irritability and severe mood swings. These traumatic effects have made him separate with his wife.
Gauch asking the hotel and estate for damages in excess of $75,000. Thank you, thank you very much.
