CELEBRITY Frank ocean

Those who know Frank Ocean are well aware of how elusive the artist remains, particularly in regards to his music, but in a rare interview with GQ, the singer opens up about everything from politics to his decision to make his Instagram account public, and he even blesses everyone with his skin care routine.

Chatting with Vegyn and Emmett Cruddas, co-hosts of his Apple Music show Blonded Radio, he explains, "Man, listen…some days, like today, I feel very beautiful. But some days, like in the winter, when I wear a lot of knit hats, my skin doesn't like that. My mom told me years ago that you gotta get somebody to stitch the silk inside the lining of the cap so it doesn't irritate your skin, 'cause your skin is sensitive."

Perhaps that's behind the new "babushka" look he recently posted to Instagram?

But, in a very relatable way, Ocean can acknowledge his parent's advice as correct and yet still fail to follow through with it.

"I didn't listen to my mom, but I really do believe in a night cream," he says. Ocean has long been famed, particularly as a queer man, for challenging heteronormative practices, and that now includes the stigma within men and their beauty routines.

"I feel like men just go to sleep. They may wash their face or they don't even bother—they go to sleep with the day face on. You really need to do a gentle wash and put a night moisturizer on. You can't have the retinol in your creams in the day because it makes you more sun-sensitive, so you wanna throw that on at night. I need the night cream because when I wake up I feel very beautiful, moisturized and ready to have people making eye contact with me, ready to look above my eyebrow, below the eyebrow. [laughs] That's the life hack right there."

As one of the most sought-after musicians in the game right now, if Ocean has a life hack, it's best to follow it.

The singer later posted a screenshot of a conversation with his mother to his Instagram Story in which she writes, "Ummm. Loved the interview buuuuut what about your suncare component?"

Such a mom move. Ocean replies, "Omg lol I really did forget I'm an idiot," then captioned the story, "Hahah sorry ma yea @unsuncosmetics SUNSCREEN REALLY IS THEEE DAILY!"

Other than his vital skincare routine, Ocean opens up about various aspects of life, including how the feeling of being misunderstood prompted him to make his social media account public, his process when it comes to covering songs, his experience in moving to New York, the efforts he took to increase voter-participation in the midterm elections, and his new year's resolution ("self-decoration").

He also shares how he thinks men can do better in 2019: "Men need to get hip to the SCOTTeVEST."

"You can put anything in it," he says excitedly, "Your water bottle, your cell phone, your motorcycle helmet—you can put all that s**t inside the SCOTTeVEST. That's the infomercial vest, really deep pockets."

There you have it, a sneak peek at 2019's utilitarian fashion trend straight from the mouth of one of the hottest trendsetters in the world right now.
