FOOD Jackfruit

This tropical produce has been coming to mainstream grocery stores more and more as demand has increased. This odd-looking, bulbous fruit can be used for both savoury and sweet dishes, but is most popular as a meat substitute.

Don't let the size of this giant southeast Asian fruit scare you, as they range from 15 to 50 lbs and have a thick, green rind that can be tough to crack. Jackfruit often comes prepped in a can or packaged in the refrigerator section.

The flavour of jackfruit changes with its time off the vine. When freshly picked, it's perfect for savoury dishes. Many compare the texture to pulled pork, and when slathered in barbecue sauce it tastes like it too. After a jackfruit is fully ripened, it turns sweet and sticky, making it better for desserts or smoothies.

Jackfruit is rich in vitamin A, vitamin C, magnesium, vitamin B6, and fibre, making it a nutritious alternative to meat (with a lot less fat), according to Eat Well.

Are you brave enough to try a jackfruit-based meal? It may just become your new vegetarian obsession.
