When others are huddled around the space heater, it takes the most dedicated of workout enthusiasts to lace up the old running shoes and get out there. While everyone tips their wool hat to you for the bravery, it's important to know your body's limits, not overdo it, and follow these tips for running protection.

One useful tip for a winter workout is including an indoor warm-up in your routine. Whether it's jumping rope, a few stretches and yoga positions, or simply just jogging in place for a bit, it won't feel so cold outside when you're already warm.

When the temperature drops, another way to stay warm is to arm your feet against the elements. Avoid shoes with mesh and wear socks that are water-resistant.

Interestingly, there is a fine line when it comes to dressing for your outdoor run. Getting too bundled will lead to over-sweating and eventually catching a chill, according to Runners World. They recommend dressing your body for weather that's 20 degrees warmer than the temperature outside.

Last, but not least, always make sure to wear a hat and gloves. Follow these tips when you're racking up the miles this winter and you'll be safe to appreciate the better weather soon.
