A public service announcement courtesy of ‘Corner Gas’ creator and star Brent Butt: it’s pronounced ‘Get Oat.’
Yes, fresh off Jordan Peele’s Best Original Screenplay win at the Oscars for ‘Get Out,’ Butt was kind enough to explain to his American audience just how Canadians really pronounce “out”.
“Dear American friends,” he started. “Here in Canada we don’t pronounce ‘out’ like ‘oot’. We pronounce it properly, as ‘oat’. Example: ‘Did you see that movie ‘Get Oat’?’ ‘No, what’s it aboat?’”

Here in Canada we don’t pronounce “out” like “oot”. We pronounce it properly, as “oat”.
Example: “Did you see that movie ‘Get Oat’?”
“No, what’s it aboat?”
Mind-blowing stuff!
The comedian’s comment started a chain reaction of people chiming in about how they pronounce “out” or how they’ve heard it pronounced across Canada.
“Owt and abowt is how I pronounce it,” tweeted one fan.

“That's a pretty strong Maritime inflection,” said another.
That's a pretty strong Maritime inflection, my Nova Scotian commercial fishermen relatives were often "oat in a boat".

“Seems like more of an Ontario thing,” tweeted yet another fan.
Seems like more of an Ontario thing. I hear @charlesadler using that pronunciation a lot.

Of course, there were those who insisted they pronounce “out” the right way.
I'm Canadian and I say it like out lol

Perhaps in your region. I say "out" like... "out". I am from NS but lived all over Canada, including Nunavut, now living in BC and have worked hard to pronounce words without a dialect.

Consensus? There doesn’t seem to be any.
