Olympian Brigette Lacquette, who plays for the Canadian women's national hockey team, just met NHL legend Fred Sasakamoose.
Sasakamoose, 84, holds the honour of being the first Indigenous player in the NHL’s history (he played for the Chicago Blackhawks). For her part, Lacquette is the first First Nations woman to play for Team Canada in hockey.
“Pretty amazing to have met the man who paved the way for many, Fred [Sasakamoose] the first Indigenous player in the NHL! #Trailblazer #Legend,” tweeted Lacquette.
She also posted a photo she took with Sasakamoose, and one of him by himself. In both, you can see that he’s wearing Lacquette’s silver medal from the PyeongChang Winter Olympics.

It should be noted that Lacquette is not the first Indigenous woman to compete for Team Canada. That would be teammate Jocelyne Larocque.
Sasakamoose was born and raised in Ahtahkakoop, Saskatchewan. Lacquette was born in Dauphin, Manitoba and raised in Mallard, Manitoba.
