CELEBRITY Breastfeeding

Following the lead of other big brands, Sports Illustrated is working to destigmatize public breastfeeding. Swimsuit model Mara Martin strutted down the runway with a child in her arms at Miami Swim Week.

Wearing a glittering gold, one-strap bikini, Martin and her daughter Aria made an international statement about normalizing nursing. She took to Instagram to share a photo of a Daily Mail article about the event, writing, “I can’t believe I am waking up to headlines with me and my daughter in them for doing something I do every day,” she wrote. “It is truly so humbling and unreal to say the least. I’m so grateful to be able to share this message and hopefully normalize breastfeeding and also show others that women CAN DO IT ALL!”

In addition to working mothers, Sports Illustrated has made significant strides in the inclusivity of plus-size, disabled, and transgendered models.

While both Martin and Sports Illustrated were met with waves of praise and backlash for the show, the magazine joins companies such as GAP, Equinox, and Yoplait who positively portray breastfeeding in advertisements and media.
