Samira Wiley, the 'Handmaid's Tale' actor, is best-known for playing the lesbian character Poussey in 'Orange Is the New Black,' but Wiley herself hadn't always been a loud and proud member of the LGBTQ

She appeared on the WNYC podcast 'Nancy' on October 8 and confessed that she hadn't been out during the entire first season.

On a show that deals with such sensitive subject matter, Wiley definitely didn't expect to be yanked out of the closet by someone from the cast. Even worse, she only found out about it when she read it in print.

It happened during an interview about the show, when some actors "were talking about out gay actors in the cast,” the Emmy winner explained. “And they mentioned my name and I saw it in print, and I cried. I cried a lot.”

Coming out, Wiley strongly believes, is something that should be done on one's own terms. She tried to get the information taken down, but ultimately, she said, "That’s something somebody took from me."

Thankfully, there's a happy ending. Wiley explained that falling in love with her character helped her fall in love with the real person she is.

And the show has given her so much more. In 2017, Wiley married Lauren Morelli, a writer on the show, who also reportedly realized she was gay throughout the series and had filed for a divorce from her husband.

Sometimes real life is better than fiction.
