CELEBRITY Person of the year

The votes are in for TIME's Person of the Year reader's poll, and the entries on the list are quite surprising—especially since many aren't one singular person, or a person at all.

The Korean boy band BTS beat out other artists, world leaders, and even the planet that we all call home. Yes, millions of people cast their votes online, putting BTS ahead of planet Earth by 0.12%.

The Thai cave divers finished in third place, their heroic spirit remaining vivid in everyone's minds. Other top finishers include: South Korean president Moon Jae-in; undocumented children; Michelle Obama; Mohammed Bin Salman, the crown prince of Saudi Arabia who has been entangled in controversy for his alleged involvement in the murder of Washington post reporter Khashoggi; Brazil’s new controversial president Jair Bolsonaro; Christine Blasey Ford; Special Counsel Robert Mueller; and Colin Kaepernick.

It's important to note that these figures are those that have, for better or for worse, had the greatest impact on the news and the world in the last year. The fact that BTS won, surpassing even the likes of Meghan Markle, Lady Gaga, and Elon Musk, signals a shift in global trends.

The seven-member group soared in popularity this year, becoming the first Korean pop band to address the UN on issues they care about, as well as becoming the most tweeted-about musicians in the world, according to the social network’s new year-end stats. In fact, the K-pop boy band are the most-tweeted-about celebrities overall, surpassing LeBron James in second place and Kanye West in third. And they didn't even have to make highly controversial comments!

The band has 17.2 million followers on Twitter, and they've also snagged the title for the most-liked tweet in the world of the last 12 months. It’s for their version of Drake’s #InMyFeelingsChallenge, and the tweet gained more than 1.7 million likes, while the video garnered more than 13.7 million views.

If you haven't been paying attention to K-pop's steady conquering of the world, it's about time to get caught up.
