CELEBRITY Justin bieber

Here are two facts that seem separate but are more related than you think: YouTube annually releases a Rewind compilation of the biggest cultural and musical moments from the year, and Justin Bieber's 2010 music video for his song 'Baby' has been the platform's most disliked video for several years now.

The 'Baby' video currently has 9.8 million dislikes, collected over a span of eight years. Now, YouTube's Rewind 2018 video has collected 9.9 million dislikes, in less than a week.

If you look in the comment section of Bieber's video, it seems this was a deliberate action taken by fans of the singer to bump him off the bottom by collectively clicking the thumbs-down button on the Rewind video.

"Justin must be feeling so relieved now," one user wrote. "We’ve done it boys. We’ve dethroned this man," another commented.

"I could not be anymore happy. We have come a long way," one another user wrote, detailing that "In just a mere 6 days we did what was thought to be impossible. But, we must give our thanks for the ones that made this possible. Thank you YouTube for making the worst possible video ever, this wouldn’t have ever happened with you guys [sic]."

The reason Beliebers chose the Rewind video as their opportunity to save Bieber's reputation was because it had already garnered so much upset. Even people who aren't fans of Bieber decided to revoke their "dislike" on his video just to make a point to the platform.

"I’m removing my dislike from this so YouTube Rewind 2018 could become the most disliked video," one user commented.

The Rewind video has been widely criticized for a number of reasons, a main one being that it continuously fails to feature some of the top YouTubers in the world, such as PewDiePie and Logan Paul, and it excludes some of the biggest web-culture events.

According to the BBC, one famous YouTuber named Marques Brownlee once praised the highlights reel, explaining that it was an honor to be featured and to see content celebrated, but now he thinks it's all about the money. Brownlee sees Rewind as a way to "showcase all the best stuff that happens on YouTube for advertisers."

"Rewind has turned into a giant ad for YouTube," he adds.

The video-hosting platform issued a statement saying that they're happy with the video, as getting the community engaged in their content is one of their main goals. “This includes liking and disliking the video. With millions of comments, millions of likes and dislikes, and more than 100M views, we’re pleased with the results,” a spokesperson said. You just can't beat them.

But, instead of focusing on the sad reality of their clickbait tactics, the comment section of Bieber's video is a great place to relish the success of solidarity.

As one user put it, "Man, the world can really accomplish some great things when we all come together for a common cause..."
