FASHION MET Gala
The Met Gala is more than just a fancy ball with a parade of celebrities toting weird and wonderful looks that will be remembered for years. It's also a celebration of the imagination behind fashion, benefiting the MoMa's Costume Institute and getting people excited about designers. Next year, however, it's tapping into the times.
The 2018 Met Gala, "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination," brought out some unbelievably opulent looks, but next year's theme is set to be even more extraordinary. According to Page Six, next May’s event will be “Camp: Notes on Fashion,” a play on Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay “Notes on ‘Camp.'”
Sontag coined the often debated term "camp," referring to an aesthetic style that favours exaggeration and ironic value, and one that disrupts high art with pop culture.
The three stars chosen to host next year's gala are also a surprising yet intriguing selection of boundary-pushing fashionistas: Harry Styles, Lady Gaga, and Serena Williams.
Andrew Bolton, the curator in charge of the Costume Institute, explained to the NY Times that the theme reflects and responds to our current cultural camp-like moment, but that what is seen as "empty frivolity" can actually be used as a powerful political tool. He also pointed out that the current president adds to the relevance of the theme.
“Whether it’s pop camp, queer camp, high camp or political camp — Trump is a very camp figure — I think it’s very timely,” Bolton said.
Sontag emphasized camp's key elements as artifice, frivolity, pretentiousness, and shocking excess, which, at least to the Met Gala, appears to reflect America's political state.
