HEALTH flu

When you work in an office, shop at the supermarket, or just generally exist in a world with other people, you are at risk of catching the hottest cold or flu on the scene. But chances are, you’re not protecting yourself as well as you could be.

America's CDC has some recommendations to help you out. The best way to avoid taking an unpleasant journey into flu-town is to get vaccinated. The vaccine isn’t always the best match for this year’s strain, but it’s a better match than no vaccine at all. You can also take antivirals to reduce your chances of catching the flu, but those require a prescription. It’s easier just to take basic precautions.

If you know someone who’s sick, stay as far away from them as you can. If it seems rude, so be it. You’ll probably be in contact with people who are sick anyway, by passing them on the street or touching the same doorknobs, so try not to touch your face. Wash your hands often with soap and water or alcohol-based hand sanitizers. Keep your home clean too, wiping down and disinfecting surfaces.

Lastly, your immune system is better-equipped to fend off the flu when you’re healthy, so take care of yourself! Eat healthy, stay hydrated, sleep well, and exercise. And if you do get the flu, you can suffer in peace with the knowledge that you did everything you could to avoid it.
