This gardener plants flowers in potholes
Planting tiny street gardens around the UK
Steve Wheen is The Pothole Gardener. Based out of the UK, this artist makes roadside joy by filling potholes with tiny gardens.
Since 2010, Wheen has planted over 200 mini-gardens. Using flowers, soil, vines, and little props, The Pothole Gardner is all about creating art in the most unexpected of places.
"The project came about because I was looking for a way to turn something crappy into something happy, and potholes became my tool," Wheen told AJ+.
He wanted to build gardens and raise awareness about mental health, as it becomes easy to get out of touch in the city. Primarily planting in London, the idea behind his tiny gardens was to bring some beauty to cracks in the city streets.
His gardens sometimes get so intricate that they turn into a little roadside world. By using miniature props such as wheelbarrows, bikes, and furniture, Wheen's gardens become full scenes for people to enjoy.
"I think these gardens are fleeting moments of happiness. And that happiness comes from the unexpected nature of the gardens," he said.
