LIFESTYLE Meteor shower

Earth Day will bring some spectacular sights to Canada this year as Mother Nature treats the country to the magic of fireballs lighting up the night sky.

The annual April event will see as many as 20 meteors streaking the skies per hour, and the Lyrids in particular are usually bright enough that you won't need binoculars or a telescope—your natural eyeballs will do!

The best night to see the Lyrids will be the night of Saturday, April 21, and it will continue into the early morning of Sunday, April 22, when the radiant point—the area in the sky from which the meteors originate—is at its highest. The shower earned its name from its radiant point’s close proximity to the Lyra constellation, which is often depicted on star maps as a vulture or an eagle carrying a lyre (a stringed musical instrument dating back to antiquity).

For optimal viewing pleasure, you should head to a place with minimal light pollution. Some dark sky reserves across Canada include Manitoulin Island (for GTA-ers), Kejimkujik (for East Coasters), Grasslands and Cypress Hill (for the Prairie residents), and Fraser Valley and Jasper National Park (for the West Coasters).

Hopefully April's meteor showers bring May flowers!
