MOVIES Jennifer Hudson
Can you think of anything more flattering than being selected by Aretha Franklin to play the legendary singer in her own biopic? Of course not. That said, it’s hard to think of a more obvious choice for the part than Jennifer Hudson, who won an Academy Award for her portrayal of Effie White in ‘Dreamgirls,’ in addition to taking on the role of Shug Avery in Broadway’s ‘The Color Purple’ revival. The actress/singer is also an award-winning solo recording artist, and is just generally known for having a seriously powerful set of singing chops.
Apparently filming will start next year. Music producer Clive Davis announced the casting recently, followed by Hudson belting out a medley of Aretha Franklin tunes.
Davis spoke to Rolling Stone, saying of Hudson, “This artist to us is a transcendent performer. She stops any and every show she’s in.”
