Everyone who watched the new Marvel superhero film 'Black Panther' was in awe of the incredible costume design. Ruth E. Carter was the costume designer and lead stylist that pushed for the Afrocentric fashion and natural hair.

"Our aesthetic was always to bring about positive visuals to the African diaspora in this country. And to dispel stereotypes," Carter told NowThis. "To be about a forward-thinking community that empowered the black community, women, and even natural hair."

Carter found and hired most of the film's designers from Etsy, and gathered costumes from Africa, India, and South Korea. The inspirations for the hairstyles came from photos from black hairstyle books that were shot by African photographers.

"I want people to have a new vision of Africa. I want people to understand it's not just this dark place where everyone dresses the same. People need to see this is a modern continent. It has a voice and an aesthetic," Carter said.
