Location - The name refers to an imaginary triangle drawn with the points at the cities of Miami (USA), San Juan (Puerto Rico), and Bermuda.

First accounts - Accounts from Christopher Columbus' first voyage to the Americas in 1492 mention strange occurrences in the Bermuda Triangle, such as compasses not working, lights in the sea, and objects falling from the sky.

Famous incidents - There have been a lot of disappearances, wreckages and accidents in this region. Lets take a look at some of the most famous incidents.

1840 - Rosalie - French ship 'Rosalie' disappeared and was later found with its sails in and hull intact, with no signs of a crash.

1872 - Mary Celeste - The 'Mary Celeste' disappeared with a 10-man crew on board, none of whom were ever found.

1902 - Freya - German boat 'Freya' left Cuba and disappeared for a day. It was found in the same place it sailed from, with none of its crew left.

1918 - Cyclops - The vessel had 309 people on board when it vanished from calm seas without any warning.

1945 - Flight 19 - Five warplanes carrying 14 people vanished without a trace.

1967 - Witchcraft - The luxury cruise liner 'Witchcraft' was just 1600 m (about a mile) off the coast of Miami when it disappeared with its whole crew after calling for assistance.

1999 - Genesis - The cargo ship sunk off the Bermuda Islands after leaving São Vicente, in Cape Verde. Its cargo included water tanks, boards, concrete and bricks.

Popularity - It was the "Flight 19" case that took place during WWII that made the Bermuda Triangle part of popular culture.

Other names - This area is also known as "The Devil's Triangle."

Sensationalism - Most scientists say that the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle is nothing more than sensationalism and people trying to make money with their stories, as reported on the History Channel.

Climate - According to Encyclopedia Britannica, it is very possible that accidents would be caused by storms, reefs, and the Gulf stream.

Statistics - Also, as The New York Times report, scientist have shown that statistically, the number of disappearances is consistent with the number of storms in the area.

Aliens - One of the History Channel's more creative theories is that these planes and ships were victims of alien abductions.

Fireball - Going back to the accounts from Christopher Columbus, the History Channel state that he was the first navigator to write about a strange ball of fire on the sea.

On balance... - However, scientist Karl Kruszelnicki explained to Australian site News.com.au that "the number of planes that go missing in the Bermuda Triangle is the same as anywhere in the world on a percentage basis."

Literature - According to Shakespeare Online, William Shakespeare's 'The Tempest' may have been written about the Bermuda Triangle.

No explanation - The fact is, there is no plausible explanation for the mysterious disappearances. On the other hand, no scientific organization considers the amount of disappearances in the region out of the ordinary, according to IflScience.
