TRAVEL Parks canada

Canada’s vast, breathtaking, and rough terrain isn’t very Google-car friendly, but the company recently rose to the landscape’s challenge.

With the help of a backpack-mounted camera called the “Street View Trekker,” and trained Parks Canada employees, Google just added three-dimensional panoramic experiences for seven remote Canadian parks to its online database. The parks include the stunning Lake Louise area in Banff National Park (Alberta), the West Coast Trail in the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve (British Columbia), and Nahanni National Park Reserve (Northwest Territories).

These parks aren’t just difficult for cars—hiking these trails takes a lot of skill, planning, and endurance. That’s also part of the reason the entire documenting initiative began. In 2013, the project began so that anyone can admire the national treasures tucked away in the most remote corners, like mountains, valleys, canyons, glaciers, alpine vistas, and more. The “Street View” is actually a hiker’s trail view, as Google Maps visitors will be able to move through trees and along paths with only a click of the mouse.

There’s still about 25% of Parks Canada space left out from Google’s database, but it might be good to leave a little surprise for the adventurous.
